Government: USA

Department of Commerce: Office of Telecommunications (ITA)
The mission of the ITA is to support the growth and competitiveness of the U.S. telecommunications industry by: promoting international trade and investment opportunities for the U.S. telecom industry; providing business counseling to U.S. telecommunications firms seeking to enter specific markets; advocacy on behalf of U.S. telecommunications firms; and conducting market research and statistical analysis of the domestic and international telecommunications industry
Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
The FCC is an independent United States government agency, directly responsible to Congress. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions. There are seven operating Bureaus responsible for developing and implementing regulatory programs, processing applications for licenses or other filings, analyzing complaints, conducting investigations, and taking part in FCC hearings.
FCC: Common Carrier Bureau
The Common Carrier Bureau is responsible for administering the FCC's policies concerning telephone companies that provide long distance and local service to consumers. The Common Carrier Bureau ensures that all consumers have rapid, efficient, nationwide and worldwide access to these services at reasonable rates. As competition grows and new technologies are introduced into the marketplace, the Bureau seeks to eliminate unnecessary regulatory burdens on carriers while protecting the interests of consumers.
FCC: Daily Digest
The Daily Digest provides a brief synopsis of Commission orders, news releases, speeches, public notices and all other FCC documents that are released each business day. The Daily Digest is released on paper, via email, and on the FCC Web Site (click on calendar dates at left) by about 1:30 p.m and is updated with hypertext links (web version only) as soon as the target documents are added to the FCC Web Site.
FCC: Network Reliability and Interoperability Council (NRIC)
The purpose of NRIC is to provide recommendations to the FCC and telecommunications industry that will assure optimal reliability and interoperability of public telecommunications networks. NRIC primarily focuses on three areas: continuing issues related to Y2K compliance; the reliability of public telecommunications network services in the United States, including the reliability of packet switched networks; and network interoperability, including facilitating technical standards to ensure spectral compatibility in wireline networks, deployment of xDSL and associated technologies, and competition among CLECs and ILECs.
FCC: Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB)
The WTB handles all FCC domestic wireless telecommunications programs and policies, including cellular telephone, paging, personal communications services, public safety, and other commercial and private radio services. The Bureau also is responsible for implementing the competitive bidding authority for spectrum auctions.
U.S. Department of Commerce: National Telecom & Information Agency (NTIA)
The NTIA is the Executive Branch's principal voice on domestic and international telecommunications and information technology issues. NTIA works to spur innovation, encourage competition, help create jobs and provide consumers with more choices and better quality telecommunications products and services at lower prices. NTIA is working to ensure that all Americans have affordable phone and cable service, advocating competition and liberalization of telecommunications policies around the world, promoting efficient use of federal radio spectrum, and encouraging the development and implementation of new and emerging telecommunications technologies.
National Association of State Telecommunications Directors (NASTD)
The NASTD is a member-driven organization whose purpose is to advance and promote the effective use of telecommunications technology and services to improve the operation of state government. NASTD members represent telecommunications professionals from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. territories and the private sector. State members are responsible for the provision and management of state government communications facilities and systems for state agencies and other public entities including hospitals, prisons, colleges and universities. These members also play a strategic role in planning and shaping their states' telecommunications infrastructures and policies. Corporate members represent companies that provide telecommunications technology, services and equipment to state government.
