Course Description

This High-Level Overview course covers the basic overall knowledge, safety and skills required to understand Buried (OSP) Outside Plant Construction in Telecommunications today.

Terminologies, standards, and safety will be covered, and the types of equipment used to construct these facilities. If time allotted and access to equipment is available, students will be able to see and or demonstrate some of this equipment and how it is used in the field. Equipment manufactures will also be providing additional training on your specific equipment.

This course is to familiarize you with the overall picture of Buried (OSP) Outside Plant Construction for Telecommunications today.

Target Audience

Technical staff whose work involves OSP construction of buried telecommunications infrastructure and the skills and knowledge to be familiar with all the necessary equipment evolved in any underground construction projects.

Basic understanding of Telecommunications is required.

Underground Utility Lines
Water Accumulation
Work site set-up

Module 3: Confined Space Operations and Overview

(1.0 hours Classroom overview)

Site set up/safety/PPE
Equipment and tools
De-watering/pumping
Purging
Continuous gas/oxygen testing

Day 2

Module 4: Hands-On Equipment Training

(4-8.0 Hours Vermeer Demonstration)

Vermeer representatives (based on availability) on-site to demonstrate all equipment

Plow
Mini-Trax
Trencher
Directional Bore Machine

Day 3

Module 4: (Continued) Hands-on Equipment Training

Technicians will be able to unload and use all equipment covered by Vermeer

Technician Operation Training and Practice of Trenching/Plowing, using Backhoe, and Backfilling
Placing Hand Holes, Pedestals and Cables
Technician use of Directional Boring Rig
Use of Utility Cable Locator
